Haley the Labrador Retriever / Black and Tan Coonhound mix at 1 year old—"Haley has the best demeanor of any dog I have ever encountered. I rescued her from my local shelter, thinking I'd have a major project on my hands; she was scared and distrustful of men. I have been working with her, running and walking with her and after almost two weeks she has come such a long way. She has both the Labrador and the hound's laid back, easy going personality. When I am inside, she is either on the floor or on the couch sleeping but when we go outside to exercise, this girl is as active as any hound or lab. However, unlike the hound, Haley doesn't have a one track mind when she is on a scent, thank you lab! I am still working on her socialization with people (she LOVES other dogs). It helps that she is submissive and quiet, where that comes from... hound maybe? In just two weeks, Haley has shown me how loyal and wonderful a rescued dog can be, especially a hound-lab mix."
The Black and Tan Labhound is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Black and Tan Coonhound. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.
