Description

The Bich-poo is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Bichon Frise and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Zoey the black Bich-poo at 6 months old—"Zoey is a Bichon / Poodle mix. Her mother was a registered Bichon Frise and her father was a registered toy Poodle. Zoey is exceptionally smart and learns commands very quickly. She is very clever and loves to perform her tricks. She has a pleasant and happy temperament and loves her family. When we first got her at 8 weeks old she had a solid black coat with a white chest spot and small white spots on her nails. She now has a black-brown coat with white textured hairs interspersed throughout. I am interested to see if her coat color continues to change with age. Recently it became clear to me that Zoey thought she was above me in the pack order. She respected my husband as the alpha. However, when I left the house she would howl and bark in a high pitched, almost panicked way. She also chewed up my shoes, took over my pillow and stole my clothes. Finally, I started doing some research and decided that I was not being the pack leader. When I made a few small changes, her behavior started to change. She does not howl anymore when I leave. Before I open doors, I have her sit and wait until I walk in first and then I let her come in after me when I say "Okay." She also is not allowed to sleep on my pillow. When I take her for walks, I make her walk next to me and she is not allowed to pull the lead. Taking Zoey on pack walks and making the other changes has really improved our relationship and has helped her become a happier dog. Cesar's way of being the pack leader has helped my husband and I have a more peaceful home. Another change that we have made is that we recently adopted a 1-year-old Cocker Spaniel. Zoey and Max quickly became friends and they expend their energy with each other rather than taking all of ours. We feel that we have quite a happy home. Next on our list of training is to teach Max the pack walk. As a 40-lb. Cocker Spaniel, we are working on retraining him to not jump up on people and to not pull the lead. I can really see that we let Zoey get away with things in the past that a larger dog would not have been allowed to do. Without this website I would not have learned about small dog syndrome and why Zoey destroyed my things and panicked when I left."

Sam and Riley the Bichon Poodles laying in a white wooden porch chair

"Introducing Sam and Riley, F1 hybrid Poochon or Bich-Poo or Bichon Poodle brothers from a litter born in January 2006. Sam and Riley sitting on a chair at 18 months of age, hanging out on a lazy Sunday—Sam (left) and Riley (right) enjoyed their lazy Sunday afternoon on the front porch. As you can see, they've also enjoyed chewing on the chair over the past several months." Photo courtesy of Rolling Meadows Puppies

"This picture is of Sam and Riley at 5 months of age riding in a shopping cart. They have pulled many antics as we continue with our adventures and saga of Sam and Riley. They are both very smart and what one doesn't think of, the other one does. They have completely different personalities but they adore each other and the two of them can always be together. Riley and Sam will be one year old next Tuesday. When do you think we should break it to Sam that he will not grow up to be a human?? Sam got the looks and Riley got the brains. They're both very smart, though and they're each handsome in their own way. A good idea to always remember is to leave the safety lock on the fridge because Sam knows how to dispense water and ice from the refrigerator. Sam knows how to open the front storm door so we always have to lock the storm door to leave the front door open. Sam also figured out how to open the safety gate at the top of the stairs so we finally just took it down. Between the two of them, Riley finds things to get into and Sam finds the way to get to them. If Riley didn't think up these things Sam would be too lazy to bother." Pete the Bichon / Poodle hybrid (Bich-poo, also called a Poochon according the ACHC) at 10 years old—"My husband and I have found the absolute beauty of the mixed breed with an asthmatic son and myself with some physical problems. We have a 10-year-old Bichon / Poosie named Pete. He is AWESOME—not only highly intelligent, but SO easy to train. He is love, love, LOVE—and when I am unable to get around (I've had 3 joint replacements), he's as calm, quiet as could be. He is a very, VERY loving and gentle dog. He weighs about 25 pounds and is TOTALLY non-shedding. Everything he's learned took only 5 goldfish crackers to master. He barely barks—3 barks to let us know someone's here is adequate for him. He loves people. He rings sleigh bells hung on the doorknob to let us know when he needs to go out. He's wonderfully calm but joyfully playful when the mood strikes him. A very obedient dog, his ability to communicate still astonishes us. All this and cute as the dickens to boot!!!"
