Golden Irish

Golden Retriever / Irish Setter Mixed Breed Dogs

Information and Pictures

A Golden Irish dog is laying on a hardwood floor with a red chair behind it.

Cooper the Golden Irish (Golden Retriever / Irish Setter mix) at 3½ years old—"He stands about 10" shorter than an Irish Setter and is therefore more compact and less lanky in his gait; walks with a bit of that Setter bounce and runs beautifully. Needs exercise and loves to fetch; I have him running off-leash once or twice a day; and is very much a water dog. He has shorter hair on his back and longer on the chest and withers and sheds significantly less than a Golden Retriever (my previous dog). His coat is really smooth and soft and is a rich chestnut color, not as red as a Setter. He has a fabulous disposition, is great with children, adapted easily to his new home (at approximate age of 1.5 yrs) and he has been quite easy to train. He has a huge personality and is very sociable. Health has been quite good to date—needs regular ear cleaning to prevent infection and occasional anal gland clearing and infusions. People often stop me in the street to ask about him and because we live in the city he makes new friends daily. Just yesterday a complete stranger said "You know, you have the best-looking dog in the neighborhood!"—definitely not the first time I've heard this type of comment."

Description

The Golden Irish is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.
