Chip the Basset Hound / Dalmatian mix breed dog at 10 years old—"Meet Chip. He is our 10 year old Bassmatian. He came about quite by accident when the neighborhood Basset Hound paid a social call on Chip's mom, a Dalmatian. We found Chip at the Washington Area Humane Society when he was 8 weeks old. Chip is the self-appointed pack leader at our house, who gets no respect from our Chihuahuas. He is a wonderful, beautiful combination of such odd breeds. He is a gentle and loving dog, but a bit greedy with his food. He loves to run and play in our backyard. He had a best friend Regi (English Setter mix) who he recently lost. They were like peas and carrots. Chip loves to walk on the trail or just sit with his family and relax. His most annoying habit is his barking when he is excited. I do have a Bark Buster, but unfortunately it only worked for about a week. The dogs got used to it and it didn't phase them."

Description

The Bassmatian is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Dalmatian and the Basset Hound. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.
