"This is my brand new Bloodhound; no name yet. She is 9 weeks old and very lovable. She was the product of an AKC-registered red female and a black/tan male. She was one of 8 puppies and the only red female; she is the runt of the litter to boot! How I came to get her is an interesting story. I am 26 years old and a Team Leader for my County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team. Our team specializes in Extreme Rope Rescues, Swiftwater/Flood Rescue, Helicopter Operations, ATVs and Snowmobile/Nordic Rescue. In short, we are a group of highly trained volunteers that can do a little of everything really well; our one flaw has always been the K9 Search Team. We have had a long line of failures in this regard and haven't had a certified search dog in ~10 years. It has gotten to the point where many in our team are ready to forget the concept. However, in addition to being an Emergency Medical Technician, Swiftwater Technician, Ambulance Attendant, and expert in several aspects of Emergency services, I am also a Veterinary Technician, having worked since 1997 in a variety of veterinary practices. Last year the idea of reviving the K9 team crossed my mind, since it combines my love of animals and my experience with years of experience with my greatest loves: Search and Rescue and Emergency Medicine. I've mulled the thought over for many months, waiting for the "perfect" set of circumstances to appear. Three days ago our SAR Team Coordinator sent out an e-mail informing the team that a man living almost 2 hours away had a litter of 8 Bloodhound puppies and, out of the goodness in his heart, wanted to donate 1-2 of those to a SAR Team that would see to it that his puppies could one day save a life. Long story short, everything moved quickly from there, and I now have a 12-lb, Bloodhound puppy sleeping at my feet...and we couldn't be happier!!!"
