Luke the Golden Retriever / Chihuahua mix (Golden Chi Retriever) at 3 years old—"I adopted Luke from my local Humane Society. When I got there I was not sure if I was going to take anybody home because I have not had a dog since I was a kid. I worried about taking on such a big responsibility. But as soon as I saw him I knew I was going to take him home with me. He was so friendly and just wanted to play. He is not a chore at all; it has been such a joy to have him in my life. His nature is super friendly to people, but he does not like other dogs and growls, barks, and then attempts to bite any one that gets close enough. I am working on some behavior conditioning and plan on going to some training classes when the holidays are over. He loves to go on walks everyday and I think he'd go forever, but after an hour and a half I am pooped out! "
The Golden Chi Retriever is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Golden Retriever. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.
