Chopper the German Shepherd Husky mix breed dog at 3 years old"My wife and I decided last Christmas that it was time for a dog so we found ourselves looking for puppies, but instead found this handsome fellow. His name is Chopper and he is our 3 year old German Shepherd Husky mix. Originally from a small town in north west Kansas we don't have much selection of dogs mostly cattle and ranch type dogs (Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Heelers). A family in my town bought this guy and at around a year old he became known as the town escape artist. He was tied to a tree outside their house for the first 2 1/2 years of his life and when he would get off he always found his way to my house. Eventually the family was ordered to hand over the dog for abuse reasons and he was taken away. About six months later we found him at the shelter and nobody wanted to keep him due to his extreme behavior and energy level, so we adopted him. He has been one of the best dogs we have ever owned. At first he had an issue with other dogs and some dicipline issues but I have been around dogs since I was born and I have my own way of training them. I prefer to use a high and low tone beeper/stimulation collar and it has never let me down. I rarely use the stimulation feature and mostly focus on the tones. Chopper here had a bad tendency of not wanting to return when called and a running away habit when ever we let him off his leash. So after a few weeks with the tones he now always returns on my command and he enjoys being able to run with my in-laws dogs around their 4 acre yard without a leash or fences to hold them back. There have even been a few days where me and him have gone antler shed hunting in the woods and he never once had wandered more than 20 yards away from me. Apart from being a very active dog he can also be a large couch potato. But we don't blame him because my wife and I agree that he deserves to live the rest of his life as a happy dog and that's exactly how he's living it now."
